4 Things to Do Once You’ve Graduated College

Now that you have graduated college and entered the world of adulthood, you might be left wondering what to do next.

You’ve got your degree and you’re temporarily living back home with your parents until you figure out what to do next.

Everybody is telling you that ‘the world is your oyster’, hoping to ease your nerves about leaving college. Instead, this just makes you feel even more reluctant to leave your student like in the past.

You’ve spent the last four years with the student status, studying hard and avoiding some of the responsibilities that come with being an adult. But even though you’ve been desperate to finish your final year exams and be free from your textbooks, you can be left feeling a bit lost when your graduation finally arrives.

If you’re feeling this way, you’re not alone. Millions of students have no clue what they’re doing after graduation. To ease your nerves and make your post-college life a little easier, here are four things to do after you graduate.

    Begin the Search for Work

After spending the majority of your life in school living off your student loans, you’re now financially responsible for yourself. One of the first things you should do as soon as you graduate is search for a job.

It can be difficult trying to find a graduate job within your field, but it’s worth applying to any that you see to give yourself the best chances of being hired.

If you’re unsuccessful in your first round of applications, you might wish to get more generalized work that doesn’t necessarily require a college degree. Even if it’s not your dream job, it’s a start! And it will enable you to have a steady stream of income until you find something better.

Alternatively, search for an apprenticeship within your qualified field of work. This will provide some income as well as giving you valuable real-life experience.

You can obtain an apprenticeship by reaching out directly to various employers or by applying to open positions online.

    Start Saving Up

Student life is often closely associated with being broke. Most students are unable to get full time or part time work during college because of their intense studying timetable.

However, one of the advantages of being free from college is being able to find a job and start saving up some money.

You might be asking yourself ‘why should I save?’ When you finally have a stream of income, you want to spend it, not save it! But if you eventually want to buy one of the new homes in Lake Forest, CA or purchase your dream car, you’re going to need to save up in order to afford these luxuries.

Of course, you can splash the cash on payday if there’s a new dress that’s caught your eye or you want to treat yourself to an expensive spa day.

After all, it’s your hard-earned money and you can spend it how you like! But try to put aside a percentage of your monthly wage to start building up some savings.

    Start Networking

As a graduate, it’s not just about what you know. It’s also about who you know. Now you’ve got your college degree, you’ve got the qualifications you need in order to get a great job, but this doesn’t guarantee you a job.

With the high volumes of graduates qualifying each year, the competition has never been higher. You have to go out of your way to engage with other professionals who are already working at a reputable company. When you build a strong connection with them, they may recommend you to their employer when a new vacancy becomes available.

Reaching out to more people within the industry and building a network gives you the added edge above your competitors. You’ve shown that you are willing to make an effort with others in the field, and this looks great to potential employers.

By interacting with those who are already employed in the industry that you desire to work in, you can gain real-life knowledge about the ins and outs of the job.

You can learn about what they dislike about their roles to better prepare yourself for the upcoming challenges in your career.

You can network by attending large events where lots of employers, professionals, and graduates can interact and exchange contact details. Networking events provide the perfect opportunity to spark up conversations with several people at once.

If you’re an introvert and the thought of going to a large event intimidates you, there are other ways to network. You can find people’s contact details online and drop them an email or arrange a video call so you can get to know one another.

Don’t be afraid to reach out to others in the field. You never know where that initial email could lead to.

    Become an Entrepreneur

If the 9-5 life isn’t for you, consider becoming an entrepreneur. It takes a lot of work and motivation to start up your own business, but with a great business plan and lots of motivation, you have the potential to be extremely successful.

Setting up your business can be confusing, but use the resources around you. Do some deep research online before you begin formulating a business plan. There are lots of great resources available for you to use.

Reach out to other business owners and ask for advice, consider hiring an accountant to help you organize your taxes, enroll on a marketing course to discover how to get your brand in front of the right people.

Make sure that your business idea aligns with your values and passions. You will be working on your business around the clock, especially as it’s just starting up. It needs to be something that sets your soul on fire. So, find something you love and start creating your business plan!
